LOS ANGELES, CA — Today, California Environmental Voters (EnviroVoters) released the following statement in response to the U.S. House of Representatives sending the Big, Ugly Bill to Trump’s desk. The bill greenlights destructive drilling and mining, wipes out pollution cleanup programs for schools and trucks, and kills funding that communities rely on to track dangerous air pollution, all while handing fossil fuel CEOs sweetheart permitting deals and slashing hundreds of thousands of clean energy jobs.

Statement from Mike Young, Executive Director, California Environmental Voters:

“The House of Representatives was designed to be the most responsive body to the people, reflecting the voices and needs of communities across the country. Instead Republican lawmakers ignored overwhelming public opposition and passed a monstrosity of a bill that’s full of giveaways to billionaires and corporate polluters, takes away healthcare and food stamps from the most vulnerable, and makes the cost of living so much worse for everyday people. It’s a moral betrayal to not just Californians but hardworking Americans.

Every member of Congress who voted for this abomination of a bill made it clear that they stand with corporations and the billionaires who’ve rigged the system to avoid accountability over their constituents. California members Ken Calvert, Vince Fong, Darrell Issa, Kevin Kiley, Young Kim, Doug LaMalfa, Tom McClintock, Jay Olbernolte, David Valadao are responsible for and must be held accountable to the devastation to California families this bill will cause. They chose to help corporate polluters fast-track destructive projects and dodge environmental review, while working families lose their healthcare and are left to bear the cost in rising energy prices, worsening air quality, and lost economic opportunity.

The people didn’t ask for this, and we won’t sit by while corporate polluters try to rewrite the rules in their favor. The test of a nation lies in how it protects its most vulnerable, not how much it gives away to those who already have the most. This cannot stand, and we must unite to this moment with resistance and relentless pressure.”
